Tulsidas

About Tulsidas

Goswami Tulsidas was a revered sixteenth-century Indian poet-saint celebrated for composing the *Ramcharitmanas*, a monumental vernacular retelling of the Sanskrit *Ramayana*. Born in Uttar Pradesh, he faced an impoverished childhood before renouncing worldly pursuits under the spiritual mentorship of his guru, Narharidas. Spending most of his adult life in the sacred city of Varanasi, Tulsidas transformed Indian literature by writing in Awadhi, a local dialect of Hindi. His greatest achievement, the *Ramcharitmanas*, democratized devotional literature by making Rama’s narrative accessible to everyday people rather than confining it to the Sanskrit-educated elite. He also authored the widely recited *Hanuman Chalisa*, a forty-verse hymn extolling devotion, and composed profound lyrical works including the *Vinaya Patrika* and *Kavitavali*. Tulsidas revitalized the Bhakti movement across northern India and established the tradition of *Ramlila*, the theatrical folk reenactment of Rama's epic journey. Today, Tulsidas’s devotional verses continue to shape Hindu spiritual practice, literary heritage, and ethical values across generations worldwide.
