About Edgar de Wahl
Edgar von Wahl, universally known as Edgar de Wahl, was a Baltic German schoolteacher, mathematician, and linguist born on August 23, 1867, in Olviopol, Russian Empire. He spent much of his life in Tallinn, Estonia, where he taught physics and mathematics at various secondary schools. De Wahl is internationally renowned as the creator of Occidental, a naturalistic constructed international auxiliary language published in 1922 and later renamed Interlingue. Before developing Occidental, he was an active proponent of Volapük and an early pioneer of Esperanto, collaborating with its creator, L. L. Zamenhof, before departing due to disagreements over language reforms. Throughout his career, de Wahl contributed extensively to linguistics and interlinguistics, authoring numerous articles and publications. He remained in Tallinn during the Soviet and Nazi occupations of Estonia in World War II, living his final years in a sanatorium. Edgar de Wahl died on March 9, 1948.
