About Thomas Mann
Paul Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, and social critic born in Lübeck on June 6, 1875. He became one of the most prominent literary figures of the twentieth century. Mann achieved early fame with his 1901 epic novel Buddenbrooks, which chronicled the decline of a wealthy merchant family. His subsequent major works, including Death in Venice and The Magic Mountain, explored complex psychological, philosophical, and societal themes. In 1929, Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, primarily in recognition of Buddenbrooks. Following the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933, Mann went into exile, eventually settling in the United States, where he became a vocal opponent of National Socialism through writings and radio broadcasts. He later published Doctor Faustus before returning to Europe. Mann died in Zurich, Switzerland, on August 12, 1955.
