About Diego Velázquez

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a prominent Spanish painter who lived from 1599 to 1660. Born in Seville, he became one of the most celebrated artists of the Spanish Golden Age and the Baroque period. Velázquez gained widespread recognition as the principal court painter for King Philip IV of Spain, a position he held for nearly four decades. His works included numerous portraits of the royal family, Spanish nobles, and common people, alongside historical and mythological scenes. Known for his masterful use of light, subtle color palettes, and realistic individualization, his masterpiece is widely considered to be Las Meninas, painted in 1656. Other notable works include The Surrender of Breda and a renowned portrait of Pope Innocent X. Velázquez died in Madrid in August 1660. His innovative technique and individualistic style profoundly influenced subsequent generations of European painters, particularly nineteenth century realists and impressionists.
