About Ratan Tata

Ratan Naval Tata was a visionary industrialist and philanthropist who transformed the Tata Group into a formidable global conglomerate as its longtime chairman. Born in Mumbai in 1937, he earned a degree in architecture from Cornell University before joining the family enterprise on the shop floor in 1961. Tata assumed leadership of Tata Sons in 1991, promptly initiating aggressive modernization and international expansion during India's economic liberalization. Under his stewardship, the conglomerate executed landmark cross-border acquisitions, including Tetley Tea, Corus Steel, and the British automotive marque Jaguar Land Rover. He also championed indigenous innovation by developing the Tata Indica, India’s first domestically designed passenger car, and subsequently the Tata Nano to provide safe, accessible mobility for millions. Beyond commercial pursuits, he directed extensive philanthropic initiatives toward advancing higher education, healthcare, and rural infrastructure throughout the nation. His enduring cultural impact lies in proving that corporate success can coexist harmoniously with uncompromising business ethics and deep social responsibility.
