About Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley was a preeminent Indian statesman and legal luminary whose most important achievement was spearheading landmark economic reforms as India’s Union Minister of Finance, most notably implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Born in 1952 in Delhi, he displayed sharp oratorical skills early on, serving as Delhi University Students' Union president before emerging as a prominent youth activist during the 1975–77 Emergency. Transitioning into law and politics, Jaitley rose to become a designated Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India, earning distinction for his legal acumen. As a pivotal leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party, he served as Minister of Law and Justice, skillfully managing crucial legislative business. Later, while steering the Finance Ministry from 2014 to 2019, he introduced the transformational Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, oversaw the 2016 demonetization policy, and established the Monetary Policy Committee to modernize the financial framework. Jaitley remains revered as the government's primary troubleshooter and a bridge across ideological divides. Today, he is remembered as a master consensus-builder whose structural economic policies fundamentally reshaped modern India's institutional architecture.
