About William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth was a major English Romantic poet who helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature. Born on April 7, 1770, in Cockermouth, Cumberland, Wordsworth developed a deep affection for the natural landscape of the Lake District early in life. He attended St John's College, Cambridge, and traveled in Europe, where the events of the French Revolution significantly influenced his early political views. In 1798, along with his close friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge, he published Lyrical Ballads. This joint work, featuring a famous preface by Wordsworth, called for a new style of poetry based on the real language of ordinary people and emotional authenticity. His major works include Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, and his autobiographical poem, The Prelude, published posthumously. Wordsworth served as Britain's Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death on April 23, 1850.
