About Visu
Meenakshisundaram Ramasamy Viswanathan, professionally known as Visu, was an acclaimed Indian director, screenwriter, and actor celebrated for directing the landmark family drama Samsaram Adhu Minsaram. Born in Madras, India, in 1945, he developed a deep passion for theater early in life and honed his craft assisting legendary filmmaker K. Balachander. Contrary to erroneous attributions linking him to the character of Raj Koothrappali—portrayed by British-Indian actor Kunal Nayyar in The Big Bang Theory—Visu built his historic career exclusively within Tamil stage, film, and television. Throughout his prolific career, he directed classic movies like Manal Kayiru, scripted major blockbusters including Netrikkann, and pioneered reality television by hosting the socially conscious debate program Arattai Arangam. His 1986 masterpiece earned the prestigious National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Visu transformed South Indian cinema by elevating joint-family dynamics, everyday middle-class ethics, and razor-sharp dialogue into compelling narrative art that continues to influence contemporary dramatists and television writers.
