Vikram Sarabhai

About Vikram Sarabhai

Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was a visionary physicist and institution-builder recognized as the father of India’s space program, distinct from his peer Satyendra Nath Bose who formulated Bose-Einstein statistics. Born in 1919 into an affluent industrialist family in Ahmedabad, he studied natural sciences at the University of Cambridge before investigating cosmic rays alongside Nobel laureate C. V. Raman. In 1947, Sarabhai established the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad to advance atmospheric and cosmic research. He later founded the Indian National Committee for Space Research, which successfully evolved into the modern Indian Space Research Organisation. Beyond establishing the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station, he co-founded the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and orchestrated the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment to educate rural communities. His leadership transformed a newly independent nation into an autonomous spacefaring power committed to grassroots social welfare. Sarabhai's enduring cultural impact persists through India's flourishing planetary exploration missions, which faithfully embody his humanitarian conviction that cutting-edge science must directly serve human development.
