Thomas Robert Malthus

About Thomas Robert Malthus

Thomas Robert Malthus (1766–1834) was an influential British political economist and demographer whose work shaped modern understandings of population dynamics and resource management. Born in Surrey, Malthus studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, and was later ordained as an Anglican priest. In 1798, he anonymously published his most famous work, An Essay on the Principle of Population. In this treatise, Malthus argued that human population tends to grow exponentially, whereas food production increases at a slower arithmetic rate. He contended that unchecked population growth would inevitably result in poverty, famine, and disease, phenomena later termed Malthusian catastrophes. To mitigate these risks, he advocated for preventive checks such as delayed marriage and moral restraint. In 1805, Malthus became the first British professor of political economy at the East India Company College in Haileybury. His theories profoundly influenced classical economics, demography, and evolutionary biology, notably inspiring Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.
