About Shivkumar Sharma
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was a legendary classical maestro who single-handedly elevated the Kashmiri santoor from a regional folk accompaniment to a globally revered solo instrument. Born in Jammu in 1938, he received early training in vocal music and tabla from his father, Uma Dutt Sharma, before dedicating his life to mastering and modifying the multi-stringed santoor. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he redesigned the instrument’s bridge structure and pioneered a novel striking technique to produce sustained, gliding vocal notes known as *meend*. In 1967, he recorded the iconic concept album *Call of the Valley* alongside flute maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia, popularizing classical idioms among mainstream listeners. As one half of the celebrated composing duo Shiv-Hari, he crafted timeless film scores for landmark Hindi movies such as *Silsila*, *Chandni*, and *Darr*. The Government of India honored his monumental contributions with the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001. His pioneering artistry remains an enduring cornerstone of Indian classical music, forever redefining the expressive capabilities of the santoor.
