About Shashi Kapoor

Balbir Raj Kapoor, professionally known as Shashi Kapoor, was a legendary Indian actor and film producer who bridged commercial Hindi cinema with international art-house projects. Born in Calcutta in 1938 into the famed Prithvi Theatres family, he began acting as a child under his father Prithviraj Kapoor's guidance. During the 1970s, he achieved superstardom with iconic mainstream blockbusters like *Deewaar*, *Trishul*, and *Kabhi Kabhie*, often forming a celebrated on-screen partnership with Amitabh Bachchan. Concurrently, Kapoor made history as a pioneer of cross-cultural cinema, starring in acclaimed Merchant Ivory productions including *The Householder* and *Shakespeare Wallah*. As a producer, he championed parallel Indian cinema by financing critically revered classics such as *Junoon*, *Kalyug*, and *36 Chowringhee Lane*. In recognition of his immense contributions to the arts, he received three National Film Awards and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. With his effortless charm and the establishment of Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre, Shashi Kapoor’s enduring cultural impact remains an inspiring cornerstone of both Indian cinematic and theatrical heritage.
