Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

About Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel integrated more than five hundred princely states into a unified independent India, serving as the nation's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. Born in Nadiad, Gujarat, in 1875, he was raised in a peasant family before qualifying as a barrister in London. He entered national politics through grassroots mobilization, successfully organizing the famous 1928 Bardoli Satyagraha, which earned him the enduring title "Sardar." In 1931, Patel presided over the Karachi Session of the Indian National Congress, shaping its pivotal declaration on fundamental rights. Following independence in 1947, he systematically orchestrated the political integration of complex territories, including Junagadh and Hyderabad, through deft diplomacy and decisive administrative authority. Additionally, he established the modern All India Services, earning recognition as the patron saint of the country's civil services. Patel's formidable statesmanship preserved the territorial integrity of the newly sovereign nation during its most vulnerable transitional era. Commemorated by the monumental Statue of Unity, his visionary leadership remains an enduring symbol of national cohesion and strength.
