About Ram Mohan Roy

Raja Ram Mohan Roy, celebrated as the "Father of the Indian Renaissance," challenged orthodox traditions to inaugurate modern socio-religious reform in India. Born into a conservative Bengali Brahmin family in 1772, he studied multiple languages and diverse religious philosophies during his youth. In 1828, Roy founded the Brahmo Sabha, later known as the Brahmo Samaj, which promoted monotheism, rejected idol worship, and championed reformed Vedic teachings. His relentless advocacy proved instrumental in the British administration's formal abolition of the practice of Sati in 1829. Beyond social reform, he pioneered independent Indian journalism by publishing *Mirat-ul-Akhbar* and staunchly campaigned for modern, English-medium education by co-founding the Hindu College in Calcutta. Traveling to Britain as an ambassador of the Mughal Empire in 1830, he became one of the first educated Indians to present domestic issues directly to the British public and parliament. Today, his intellectual courage and pioneering vision endure as the foundational cornerstone of India’s modern democratic and secular awakening.
