About M.S. Subbulakshmi

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi was a legendary Indian Carnatic vocalist who became the first musician ever awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. Born in 1916 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, into a family of traditional performers, she received her early training under her mother and gave her first public performance at age eleven. Subbulakshmi achieved national acclaim through her devotional singing and memorable cinematic roles, notably portraying the saint-poet Bhakta Meera in 1945. She broke global boundaries as the first Indian musician to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, an event that introduced classic South Indian music to international audiences. Later, in 1974, she made history as the first Indian musician to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for public service. Beyond her technical mastery, she remained a committed philanthropist who donated the proceeds of numerous concerts to humanitarian causes. Her celestial voice and selfless dedication to the arts permanently elevated Carnatic music and established her as an eternal cultural icon of India.
