About Émile Zola
Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola was an internationally known French novelist, journalist, playwright, and poet who lived from 1840 to 1902. As a leading figure in the literary school of naturalism, Zola transformed late nineteenth century literature through his rigorous, scientific approach to depicting social reality. He is best remembered for his monumental twenty volume novel cycle, Les Rougon-Macquart, which painstakingly tracked the influence of heredity and environment on a single family under the Second French Empire. Notable works within this series include Germinal, L'Assommoir, and Nana. Beyond his creative prose and theatrical works, Zola was a prominent journalist whose political activism dramatically impacted French history. In 1898, he published his famous open letter J'Accuse, defending the wrongly accused Jewish army officer Alfred Dreyfus, an act that galvanised the Dreyfus Affair and solidified Zola's status as a major public intellectual. He died in Paris in 1902.
