Maxim Gorky

About Maxim Gorky

Maxim Gorky, whose full name was Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, was an internationally known Russian and Soviet writer and political activist who lived from 1868 to 1936. Born in Nizhny Novgorod, he endured a difficult childhood that inspired much of his early literary work. Gorky rose to fame with short stories describing the lives of marginalized social groups, eventually achieving worldwide acclaim for his powerful prose and drama, including the famous play The Lower Depths and the novel Mother. A prominent figure in the Russian revolutionary movement, he maintained a complex relationship with the Bolshevik party and spent several years in self-imposed exile in Italy. Upon his return to the Soviet Union in the 1930s at the invitation of Joseph Stalin, Gorky was celebrated as a founder of Socialist Realism, the official Soviet literary doctrine. He remained an influential literary administrator and public intellectual until his death in Moscow in 1936.
