About Maurice Ravel

Joseph-Maurice Ravel, born on March 7, 1875, in Ciboure, France, was an internationally known French composer, pianist, and conductor. He lived from 1875 to 1937 and became one of the foremost figures of early twentieth-century classical music. Ravel is frequently associated with Impressionism alongside his contemporary Claude Debussy, although he rejected the label. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Gabriel Fauré, developing a style characterized by meticulous craftsmanship, inventive harmonies, and masterful orchestral technique. Among his most famous compositions are the hypnotic orchestral piece Boléro, the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, the piano work Pavane pour une infante défunte, and his influential orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Ravel was also acclaimed for virtuosic piano compositions like Gaspard de la nuit. In his later years, a progressive neurological condition impaired his ability to compose. He died in Paris on December 28, 1937.
