About Maria Montessori

Maria Tecla Artemisia Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, was born on August 31, 1870, in Chiaravalle, Italy, and died on May 6, 1952, in Noordwijk, Netherlands. She became one of Italy's first female medical doctors after graduating from the University of Rome in 1896. Initially working in psychiatry, Montessori developed a deep interest in child development and educational theory. In 1907, she opened the Casa dei Bambini, a childcare center in Rome, where she tested and refined her innovative teaching philosophy. Her approach emphasized child-centered learning, self-directed activity, mixed-age classrooms, and specialized instructional materials. Known globally as the Montessori method, this pedagogical system gained international acclaim and revolutionized early childhood education. Montessori spent her later years lecturing worldwide, publishing books, and training teachers, including a significant period in India during World War II. She was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy of education and peace.
