About Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi led the Indian independence movement, successfully liberating India from British colonial rule through pioneering philosophies of nonviolent civil disobedience. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, he studied law in London before moving to South Africa to practice in 1893. There, he spent two decades developing his signature philosophy of *satyagraha*—devotion to truth through passive resistance—while fighting against racial discrimination targeting the Indian immigrant community. Returning to India in 1915, Gandhi transformed the Indian National Congress into a mass nationalist vehicle. He launched the nationwide Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920, urging citizens to boycott British institutions, goods, and honors. In 1930, he famously led the 240-mile Salt March to the Arabian Sea to protest the unjust British salt monopoly, sparking widespread defiance across the subcontinent. He later unified the final push for sovereignty with the 1942 Quit India Movement. Revered globally as the Father of the Nation, Gandhi remains an immortal beacon of nonviolent resistance whose timeless principles directly inspired modern civil rights movements worldwide.
