About Kiran Mazumdar Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is a pioneering Indian entrepreneur who founded Biocon Limited, transforming it from an industrial enzyme manufacturer into one of the world's leading biopharmaceutical enterprises. Born in Bangalore in 1953, she initially aspired to become a master brewer like her father, earning a brewing degree from Ballarat University in Australia. Facing gender barriers in that industry, she established Biocon in 1978 in a rented shed with minimal capital. Under her vision, Biocon became the first Indian company to receive approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration for a biosimilar drug in 2017. She established Syngene International in 1993 to provide specialized scientific research services globally, and later expanded Biocon’s focus to develop affordable insulins for diabetes care. Beyond commercial triumphs, she signed the Giving Pledge to allocate substantial resources toward philanthropic efforts, particularly healthcare infrastructure and clinical research access for underserved communities. Her enduring cultural impact lies in dismantling gender barriers within STEM and establishing India as an undisputed global hub for high-end biotechnology and affordable life-saving medicines.
