Karl Marx

About Karl Marx

Karl Heinrich Marx was an internationally known German-born philosopher, economist, political theorist, historian, and sociologist who lived from 1818 to 1883. Born in Trier, Prussia, Marx studied law and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Berlin. Due to his radical political writings, he was exiled from Germany, France, and Belgium, eventually settling in London in 1849, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Collaborating closely with Friedrich Engels, Marx authored critical analyses of society, economics, and politics. His most famous works include the 1848 pamphlet The Communist Manifesto and the multi-volume economic treatise Das Kapital. Marx argued that human societies develop through class struggle, criticizing capitalism for exploiting the working class and predicting its eventual replacement by a socialist system. His theories, collectively known as Marxism, exerted a profound influence on modern global political history, sociology, and economic thought throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
