Kabir Das

About Kabir Das

Kabir Das was a revered fifteenth-century Indian mystic poet and saint whose profound verses spearheaded the transformative Bhakti movement across northern India. Born in Varanasi to a family of Muslim weavers, he spent his youth learning the craft while immersing himself in intense spiritual contemplation. Kabir revolutionized vernacular literature by composing poignant two-line couplets known as *Dohas*, which articulated deep philosophical truths in the accessible everyday dialect of the common people. He composed influential devotional hymns that compiled into the monumental *Bijak*, establishing a cornerstone of North Indian mysticism. Furthermore, his teachings formed the philosophical bedrock of the Kabir Panth religious community, while over five hundred of his verses earned immortal preservation within the *Guru Granth Sahib*, the sacred scripture of Sikhism. Kabir's fearless rejection of religious sectarianism, ritual hypocrisy, and rigid caste distinctions fundamentally reshaped the spiritual and literary landscape of medieval India. Today, his timeless verses continue to inspire universal harmony and moral introspection across diverse cultures and generations worldwide.
