About John XXIII
Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli on November 25, 1881, was an Italian prelate who served as head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from October 28, 1958, until his death on June 3, 1963. Born into a peasant family in Sotto il Monte, he was ordained a priest in 1904 and served in various diplomatic roles for the Holy See, including apostolic nuncio to Bulgaria, Turkey, and France, before becoming Patriarch of Venice in 1953. Elected pope at age 76, he was initially expected to be a caretaker pontiff. Instead, he made history by convoking the Second Vatican Council in 1962 to address the Church's relationship with the modern world. John XXIII championed ecumenism, human rights, and international peace, notably intervening during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He authored major encyclicals, including Pacem in Terris. He was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2014.
