About John Maynard Keynes

John Maynard Keynes, born in 1883 and died in 1946, was a British economist whose ideas fundamentally altered the theory and practice of modern macroeconomics and national economic policies. Educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, Keynes served in the British Treasury during the First World War. He gained international renown with his 1919 book, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, which criticized the heavy reparations imposed on Germany after the war. His landmark 1936 work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, challenged classical economic doctrine by advocating for active government intervention, public spending, and fiscal policy to manage aggregate demand and mitigate economic recessions. Near the end of his life, Keynes played a decisive role in shaping the post-war global financial architecture at the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference, contributing to the establishment of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Keynesian economics remains central to modern macroeconomic theory.
