    About Jean-Paul Sartre

Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre was an internationally known French existentialist philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, and political activist who lived from 1905 to 1980. Born in Paris, he became one of the leading figures in twentieth-century French philosophy and Marxism. Sartre studied at the École Normale Supérieure and later taught philosophy. His seminal philosophical work, Being and Nothingness, published in 1943, explored concepts of human freedom, responsibility, and existential angst. Beyond technical philosophy, he achieved literary fame with his 1938 novel Nausea and his 1944 play No Exit. Sartre maintained a lifelong intellectual and romantic partnership with the feminist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, but he famously refused the honor, arguing that a writer should not allow himself to be transformed into an official institution. He remained dedicated to leftist political causes and social critique until his death in Paris in 1980.
