Returning to India in the 1970s, he conducted foundational research in relativistic astrophysics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. In 1988, he established the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, shaping it into a world-class institute as its founding director. Alongside research, he authored acclaimed science fiction and popular science literature in English and Marathi, championing scientific rationalism nationwide. Recipient of prestigious honors, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Kalinga Prize, he remains a transformative pioneer whose vision permanently elevated Indian cosmology on the global stage.
