About Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Hrishikesh Mukherjee was an acclaimed Indian film director whose crowning achievement was directing the timeless masterpiece Anand. Born in Calcutta in 1922, he studied science and worked as a teacher before mastering film editing under director Bimal Roy. Although occasionally confused with contemporary filmmaker B. R. Chopra, founder of BR Films and creator of Naya Daur, Waqt, and Mahabharat, Mukherjee forged his own path. His early drama Anuradha won the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1960. He subsequently earned widespread acclaim for Anand in 1971, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Film. Later, he revolutionized Hindi comedy with beloved hits like Chupke Chupke and the iconic 1979 satire Gol Maal. Across four decades, his work mirrored the moral compass, warmth, and quiet resilience of urban families. In 1999, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest cinematic recognition. His legacy endures as a masterclass in compassionate storytelling that bridges commercial appeal and artistic depth.
