Homi Jehangir Bhabha was a visionary theoretical physicist widely celebrated as the principal architect of India’s nuclear energy programme. Born in 1909 into a prominent Bombay family, he completed his higher education at the University of Cambridge, publishing seminal research in quantum electrodynamics. During the 1930s, he mathematically derived the electron-positron scattering cross-section, a fundamental discovery globally recognised as Bhabha scattering. Returning to India, he established the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1945 to cultivate indigenous scientific talent and basic research. He subsequently founded the Atomic Energy Establishment at Trombay and devised India’s innovative three-stage nuclear power strategy. As head of the Department of Atomic Energy, he formed the national space committee that directly spawned ISRO, while actively championing institution-builders who established IIM Ahmedabad. His dynamic synthesis of scientific excellence, state-level administration, and arts patronship fundamentally transformed the nation’s post-independence scientific infrastructure. Today, he remains an enduring cultural icon of scientific ambition and self-reliant nation-building across India.
