Hirohito

About Hirohito

Hirohito, born Michinomiya Hirohito on April 29, 1901, was the 124th emperor of Japan, reigning from December 25, 1926, until his death on January 7, 1989. Posthumously known in Japan as Emperor Showa, his sixty-two-year reign was the longest in recorded Japanese history. During the first half of his tenure, Japan underwent rapid militarization, territorial expansion, and participation in World War II as an Axis power. Following Japan's defeat in 1945, Hirohito announced the nation's surrender via radio broadcast. Under the 1947 constitution drafted during the Allied occupation, he renounced his traditional divine status and was redefined as a constitutional monarch and a symbol of the state without political power. Throughout the postwar era, he helped rehabilitate Japan's international image and presided over its remarkable economic recovery. Aside from his imperial duties, Hirohito was an accomplished marine biologist who published several scientific works.
