About Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau was an internationally known American essayist, poet, and philosopher who lived from 1817 to 1862. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, his full name was David Henry Thoreau, though he reversed his first names after graduating from Harvard College. Thoreau was a prominent figure in the Transcendentalist movement alongside his close friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. He is best remembered for his book Walden, published in 1854, which details his two-year experiment in simple, self-sufficient living near Walden Pond. His influential 1849 essay, Civil Disobedience, argues for moral resistance to an unjust state and later inspired global political figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. In addition to his philosophical writing, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, naturalist, and pioneer of environmental history. He spent most of his life in Concord, writing extensively in journals before his death from tuberculosis at age forty-four.
