Friedrich Nietzsche

About Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was an influential German philosopher, classical philologist, cultural critic, and poet who lived from October 15, 1844, to August 25, 1900. Born in Rocken, Prussia, he demonstrated exceptional academic talent and was appointed to the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel in 1869 at twenty-four. Health problems forced him to resign in 1879, after which he spent a decade writing his most prominent philosophical works. Nietzsche’s writing critiqued traditional Western religion, morality, and philosophy. He introduced influential concepts such as the will to power, the Übermensch, eternal recurrence, and the death of God. His notable publications include Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and On the Genealogy of Morality. In January 1889, Nietzsche suffered a complete mental breakdown and remained incapacitated until his death in Weimar in 1900. His radical ideas deeply influenced twentieth-century existentialism, postmodernism, and psychology.
