About Frida Kahlo
Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a Mexican painter known internationally for her uncompromising and vividly colored self-portraits. Born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, Mexico City, Kahlo suffered from polio as a child and survived a devastating bus accident in 1925. The severe injuries left her with chronic pain and required numerous surgeries throughout her life. During her recovery, she began painting, often using a mirror mounted above her bed. Her works incorporated elements of traditional Mexican folk culture, surrealism, and symbolism, exploring themes of identity, pain, mortality, and the human body. In 1929, Kahlo married the prominent Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, a volatile relationship marked by mutual artistic influence and personal tumult. Kahlo was also politically active, maintaining ties to the Mexican Communist Party. She died on July 13, 1954, at the age of forty-seven. Posthumously, Kahlo achieved widespread acclaim, becoming a celebrated figure in modern art and feminist history.
