Fernando Pessoa

About Fernando Pessoa

Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa was a Portuguese poet, writer, and philosopher who lived from 1888 to 1935. Born in Lisbon, he spent much of his youth in Durban, South Africa, gaining fluency in English and Portuguese. Pessoa is internationally known as one of the most significant literary figures of the twentieth century. His defining contribution was the creation of a complex heteronymic system through which he invented dozens of distinct alter egos. Far beyond simple pseudonyms, these heteronyms possessed complete biographies, distinct writing styles, physical traits, and unique philosophical beliefs. Among his most prominent heteronyms were the pastoral poet Alberto Caeiro, the neoclassical doctor Ricardo Reis, the modernist engineer Álvaro de Campos, and the assistant bookkeeper Bernardo Soares, credited with writing the prose masterpiece The Book of Disquiet. Although Pessoa published relatively little during his lifetime, his posthumously discovered writings established his enduring international stature in modern literature.
