Elizabeth II

About Elizabeth II

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, born April 21, 1926, was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from February 6, 1952, until her death on September 8, 2022. She was the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-verified female head of state in history. The elder daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, she became heir presumptive when her father ascended the throne in 1936. During the Second World War, she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, with whom she had four children, including her successor, King Charles III. Her reign spanned seven decades, during which she witnessed post-war reconstruction, the decolonization of the British Empire, the Cold War, and the devolution of power in the United Kingdom. She maintained strict political neutrality while undertaking thousands of official duties and acting as Head of the Commonwealth. She died at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, aged ninety-six.
