About Durgabai Deshmukh

Durgabai Deshmukh was a legendary freedom fighter and social reformer who pioneered the institutional framework for women's welfare and social development in modern India. Born in 1909 in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, she entered public life at age twelve during the Non-Cooperation Movement, driven by an unyielding commitment to justice. During the 1930 Salt Satyagraha, she organized protests in Madras, which led to her imprisonment by British authorities. While practicing law as a pioneer advocate, she established the Andhra Mahila Sabha in 1937, transforming it into a vital South Indian institution providing healthcare, education, and vocational training for underprivileged women. Later, as an esteemed member of the Constituent Assembly, she shaped national social policy and subsequently founded the Central Social Welfare Board in 1953 to formalize state-sponsored humanitarian efforts. Her initiatives fundamentally restructured South Indian philanthropy by replacing patronizing charity with sustainable women's empowerment. Today, her visionary institution-building continues to serve as an enduring blueprint for gender equality and grassroots welfare across the Indian subcontinent.
