About Charles Baudelaire

Charles Pierre Baudelaire was an internationally acclaimed French poet, art critic, and translator whose work profoundly influenced the development of modern European literature. Born in Paris on April 9, 1821, Baudelaire became a pivotal figure in nineteenth-century culture. His landmark 1857 poetry collection, Les Fleurs du mal, explored themes of modern industrial life, urban spleen, sensuality, and existential despair. Though initially prosecuted for offending public morals, the volume revolutionized poetic form and aesthetic sensibility, establishing him as a chief forerunner of Symbolism and modernist literature. Beyond his original poetry, Baudelaire was an insightful art critic who championed painters like Eugène Delacroix and formulated influential ideas on modern art and urban dandyism. He was also instrumental in introducing American writer Edgar Allan Poe to French readers through his acclaimed translations. Plagued by financial difficulties and declining health, Baudelaire died in Paris on August 31, 1867, leaving a lasting literary legacy.
