Tanjore Balasaraswati was a legendary Indian classical dancer who elevated the art of Bharatanatyam from hereditary temple traditions to worldwide acclaim. Born in 1918 into a distinguished lineage of Thanjavur musicians and devadasis, she began formal dance training at age four under guru Kandappa Pillai. While public memory sometimes conflates her with contemporary Mrinalini Sarabhai, founder of Darpana Academy and wife of Vikram Sarabhai, Balasaraswati uniquely championed the traditional Thanjavur style. In the 1960s, she introduced authentic Bharatanatyam to the West through landmark appearances at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. She later established a dance school at the Madras Music Academy and taught widely as a visiting artist at American institutions, including Wesleyan University. The Government of India honored her immense mastery with both the Padma Bhushan and the prestigious Padma Vibhushan. Her visionary career revitalized classical abhinaya, rescuing it from historical stigma and establishing it as an elite concert art. Today, Balasaraswati endures as the definitive benchmark of expressive purity and artistic integrity in Indian classical dance.
