About Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali was a legendary Indian freedom fighter renowned for fearlessly hoisting the Indian National Congress flag at Bombay’s Gowalia Tank Maidan during the 1942 Quit India Movement. Born in Kalka in 1909, she grew up in an orthodox Bengali family and studied in Lahore before dedicating her life to national liberation. During the independence struggle, she directed clandestine radio broadcasts and edited underground nationalist journals while successfully evading British colonial arrest. Following independence, she became the first female Mayor of Delhi in 1958, leading vital municipal modernization programs and progressive social welfare initiatives. In recognition of her extraordinary national service, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Vibhushan in 1992, followed by the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Though completely unrelated to the astrophysicist researchers who collaborated with Fred Hoyle on steady state cosmology, she achieved lasting historical prominence through political mobilization. Her fearless leadership and unwavering patriotism cement her enduring cultural impact as an immortal symbol of female empowerment and anti-colonial resistance in modern India.
