About Annie Besant

Annie Besant was an influential British-born political reformer, theosophist, and freedom fighter who served as the first woman President of the Indian National Congress in 1917. Born in London in 1847, she overcame an unhappy marriage to champion secularism, free thought, and workers' rights across Britain. In 1893, she traveled to India after joining the Theosophical Society, shifting her primary focus to cultural revival and national autonomy. She co-founded the Central Hindu College at Varanasi in 1898, which later developed into Banaras Hindu University. In 1916, Besant established the All India Home Rule League alongside Bal Gangadhar Tilak to demand self-determination from British colonial authorities. Her tireless agitation and subsequent internment galvanized widespread national support, cementing her election as the Congress’s first female leader. Besant bridged Eastern spiritual philosophies with modern constitutional agitation, profoundly shaping the trajectory of India's freedom struggle. Today, her enduring cultural impact persists in her visionary educational reforms and unyielding defense of Indian sovereignty.
