    About Alexander Fleming

Sir Alexander Fleming was a Scottish biologist, pharmacologist, botanist, and Nobel laureate whose scientific discoveries transformed twentieth-century medicine. Born on August 6, 1881, in Darvel, Scotland, Fleming received his medical education at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, where he spent most of his research career. In 1923, he identified lysozyme, a naturally occurring antibacterial enzyme found in human tissues and secretions. His breakthrough discovery came in 1928, when he observed that a mold, later identified as Penicillium rubens, inhibited the growth of staphylococci bacteria. Fleming named the active substance penicillin and published his research in 1929. Although he struggled to isolate the compound in large quantities, scientists Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain later developed it into a mass-produced drug. For this vital achievement, Fleming shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Florey and Chain. Knighted in 1944, Fleming died in London on March 11, 1955.
