The High Priestess Tarot Card Meaning

The High Priestess stands for quiet inner knowing and things not yet revealed. Upright she says wait, listen and trust what you sense before acting. Reversed she warns against surface judgements and ignoring your own intuition.

    The High Priestess upright

Waite seats her between a black and a white pillar, a scroll marked TORA half hidden in her lap and a crescent moon at her feet. She guards the secret law behind the obvious. In a reading she suggests that not everything is known yet: gather information quietly, notice what your gut is telling you, and let the picture complete itself.

    The High Priestess reversed

Waite reversed gives passion, pride and superficial knowledge. In practice: reacting before you understand, or letting other people's noise drown out what you already sense to be true.

    A is one drawn upside-down.

    The High Priestess in love

Deep, unspoken feelings — yours or theirs. Give the connection time and space before asking for answers.

    The High Priestess in career

A time for research, reflection and discretion. Keep plans confidential until they are ready.

    The High Priestess in money

Do not decide on partial information. Read the fine print and wait for the full picture.

Is The High Priestess a yes or no?

Upright: Mixed / not yet. A "not yet" card: the answer is still hidden. Ask again when you know more.

Reversed: Reversed, The High Priestess reads as a gentle no: surface knowledge, ignoring intuition, impatience.

The yes/no lean is BornClock’s reading convention drawn from the card’s meaning — Waite himself did not assign one.

Symbolism in the The High Priestess card

What appears in the 1909 Rider–Waite–Smith picture, as Waite describes it:

    • Two pillars, black and white — Waite: the pillars of the mystic temple — opposites held in balance
    • Scroll marked TORA, partly covered — a deeper law; some things are spoken, some only implied
    • Crescent moon at her feet — reflected light — intuition and the inner life
    • Veil of palms and pomegranates — behind her, screening the temple (not explained by Waite)
    • Solar cross on her breast — not explained by Waite

    In Waite’s own words (paraphrased)

Upright: secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed; silence, tenacity, wisdom, science.

Reversed: passion, moral or physical ardour, conceit, surface knowledge.
