Nine of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

The Nine of Wands is resilience: battered but still standing guard. Upright it says hold on — you are stronger than the opposition. Reversed it shows obstacles and adversity, a call to rest and regroup.

    Nine of Wands upright

A figure leans on his staff, watchful, as if awaiting an enemy, with eight staves standing behind him like a fence. Waite says that if attacked he will meet it boldly. The card also brings delay and adjournment: hold the line a little longer.

    Nine of Wands reversed

Waite reversed gives obstacles, adversity and calamity. Do not fight every battle; protect your energy and ask for reinforcements.

    A is one drawn upside-down.

    Nine of Wands in love

Guardedness after past hurt. Protect your heart, but do not lock everyone out.

    Nine of Wands in career

The last stretch of a long project. Persist, and pace yourself.

    Nine of Wands in money

Keep reserves; this is not a moment to drop your guard.

Is Nine of Wands a yes or no?

Upright: Mixed / not yet. Yes eventually — after some delay and persistence.

Reversed: Reversed, Nine of Wands reads as a gentle no: obstacles, adversity, exhaustion.

The yes/no lean is BornClock’s reading convention drawn from the card’s meaning — Waite himself did not assign one.

Symbolism in the Nine of Wands card

What appears in the 1909 Rider–Waite–Smith picture, as Waite describes it:

    • Watchful figure leaning on a staff — Waite: ready to meet an attack boldly
    • Eight staves like a palisade — boundaries already in place

    In Waite’s own words (paraphrased)

Upright: strength in opposition; a bold defence if attacked; delay, suspension, adjournment.

    Reversed: obstacles, adversity, calamity.
