Dates are for India (IST). A period that touches part of a day rules that whole sunrise-to-sunrise day out.

    How these dates are chosen

This is the Panchang Shuddhi step: the day’s , , , and weekday must all be suitable at the same time. Mundan is done in daylight, so only the sunrise-to-sunset part of each day is listed.

    • Sun’s month: only while the Sun is in Makara, Kumbha, Mesha, Vrishabha or Mithuna (roughly mid-January to mid-July, skipping Meena).
    • Nakshatra: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha and Revati.
    • Tithi and weekday: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi, on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Not in , the harsh Yogas, , a Sankranti or eclipse day, an , or while Jupiter or Venus is .

These follow the Mundan (Chudakarana) rules Drik Panchang describes. Families also go by the child’s age (Drik Panchang notes the 3rd, 5th or 7th year for boys and even years for girls) and their own custom; the priest checks the child’s Moon and star (Chandra and Tara bala) and the Lagna on the day.

Everything is computed from the real sidereal () positions of the Sun and Moon — the same engine as our daily Panchang — for each place’s own sunrise-to-sunrise day. Windows shorter than 5 minutes are dropped. How we calculate this →

    Frequently Asked Questions

Mundan (Chudakarana) is listed only in daylight while the Sun is in Makara, Kumbha, Mesha, Vrishabha or Mithuna, on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, with a suitable Tithi (Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi) and Nakshatra (Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Revati) — avoiding Bhadra, harsh Yogas, Sankranti and eclipse days, an Adhik month and Guru/Shukra Asta.

Tradition does the first haircut while the Sun is in Makara, Kumbha, Mesha, Vrishabha or Mithuna — roughly mid-January to mid-July, skipping the Meena month (mid-March to mid-April). From mid-July to mid-January there are no Mundan dates.

This is the general Panchang list. Drik Panchang and family priests then check the Lagna and the child’s own Moon and star (Chandra and Tara bala), so a priest may pick fewer days or a narrower time. The child’s age and family custom come first.

The Tithi and Nakshatra change at the same moment everywhere, but a Hindu day runs from local sunrise to the next sunrise, and the clock time depends on the time zone. So a window can start or end at a different local time, and occasionally fall on a different date, in another city. The list above is for New Delhi; choose your city to recompute it in your browser.
