    Critically, missing a single day had little impact on the overall trajectory. Habit formation is not a 21-day binary achievement โ€” it's a gradual, non-linear process.

    The Neuroscience: Basal Ganglia and Dopamine Loops

    Habit formation occurs primarily in the basal ganglia โ€” the evolutionarily ancient structures at the base of the brain responsible for procedural memory, motor learning, and reward processing. When you repeat a behaviour enough times, the basal ganglia essentially "automate" it, offloading the cognitive work from the prefrontal cortex (conscious decision-making) to a more automatic circuit.
