In medieval Europe, opal was considered lucky — it was believed to contain the good fortune of every gem whose color it reflected. The bad luck reputation (surprisingly persistent) was entirely invented by Sir Walter Scott's novel "Anne of Geierstein" (1829), in which a magical opal causes disaster.

    Opal is amorphous silica — it has no crystal structure, which is unusual for a mineral. It forms from silica-rich water that percolates through cracks in rock and slowly deposits layers of silica spheres as the water evaporates. The play of color (called opalescence or "play-of-color") in precious opal is caused by diffraction of light through the regular arrangement of these silica spheres — like a very orderly diffraction grating.
