Diamond is pure carbon crystallized under extreme pressure (45,000 to 60,000 atmospheres) and temperature (900–1,300°C), typically at depths of 150–200 km below Earth's surface in the lithospheric mantle. The crystals are carried to the surface by explosive volcanic eruptions through pipes of a rock called kimberlite. Color in diamonds comes from structural defects or trace elements: nitrogen causes yellow, boron creates blue, and natural irradiation produces green.
